Recovering Oil with Sludge Drying Unit for EDM – Case Study

About Client

Our client is a US-based firm that specializes in manufacturing precision parts for the aerospace, automotive and gas turbine industry.

The Challenge

The client had been collecting swarf generated from their EDM (Electric Discharge Machining) machines in plastic buckets, leaving it for days and using the process of sedimentation to collect small amounts of oil from it. Having around 23 liters (6 gallons) of swarf generated every day, the client needed a more efficient method to extract more oil from the swarf.

The Solution

To achieve the best out of their investment, we suggested our Sludge Drying Unit that could extract maximum oil from the sludge, efficiently reducing the waste generated, at the same time preventing excess oil in the sludge from being wasted.

The company leased SE Coopermatics’ sludge drying unit, the SDU-6 model for a three-week trial to test the equipment’s capabilities. The following were the results of the test:

As per our recordings, our SDU-6 model, which is the smallest unit, was able to reduce sludge waste by 13.5 liters (3.5 gallons) and recover around 9.5 liters (2.5 gallons) of oil daily. Calculating the cost, it would amount to $30 X 2.5 Ga = $75 worth of oil daily and save an estimated $19,500 (INR 14,30,000)) worth of oil every year!

From this experiment (estimated for a 5-day work week), we were able to conclude that 42% of oil can be recovered in a batch time of 24 hours.

With the help of our sludge drying unit, the client is able to:

  • Efficiently recover more oil
  • Save on costs
  • Reduce oil content in disposed sludge
  • Reduce environmental impact
